Detailed description of the service
The NFDI4ING Terminology Service is a central access point for the use of terminologies and semantic models in research data management for engineers.
Users of this service can be either humans or machines. Key human users of the service are using our service website. Among others, decision makers (find suitable terminological resources), knowledge engineers (working on- and with terminologies- and semantic models) or developers (integration of terminologies- and semantic models). Machine, on the other hand, use a clearly defined interface of the service to automatically retrieve the information provided. Examples for such machine based usage of the service is given in the table below.
TermClick – A browser plugin to look up and display definitions of words. The service is queried via its REST interface and provides corresponding definitions.
ORKG – Describe research papers in a structured manner. The service is queried via its REST interface and provides corresponding labels.
Application Profile Service – In the AIMS frontend users can search and drag vocabulary terms into their application profile. The service is queried via its REST interface and provides corresponding resources.
ARUNA – A cloud-native, geo-redundant, scalable, and domain-agnostic object storage based data mesh system that orchestrates scientific data and a rich set of associated metadata according to FAIR principles. The service is queried via its REST interface and provides corresponding resources.
SC4EU – The vocabulary development platform is a place to collect and discuss specialised terms and definitions. The service is queried via its REST interface and provides corresponding labels, Definitions and persistent identifiers.
PASTA ELN – Is an ELN that is used by experimental scientists. The service is queried via its REST interface to link words with defined terminologies
MARBLE – A programme to decode / hack proprietary binary data from instruments. The service is queried via its REST interface to link words with defined terminologies
In a nutshell: The NFDI4ING Terminology Service provides a consolidated single-access point for human and machine users for processing terminologies and semantic models in research data management. The service provides the following main features:
• Search, browse or filter for- and in terminologies and semantic models. E.g.
• definition for “stress” or “agent” in your engineering domain
• semantic model that allows you to describe your experimental setup and process
• Visualisation, to understand the context of a term or semantic model
• Automated processing of terminologies or semantic models in research data management tools with the defined interface

#WhyNFDI
The NFDI is a real benefit for everyone who works with and on terminology services and develops them further. This is because it has the great advantage of working on its own initiative to standardise terms in a variety of disciplines. This improves the interoperability of data and supports collaboration between different research disciplines. This is based in particular on the NFDI’s alignment with the FAIR principles to make data easier to find, accessible, interoperable and reusable. It is particularly important for us to be able to draw on existing terminologies and semantic models.
