Introduction
This community hub is the one-stop shop for all NFDI4Ing community activities. We are a user-driven consortium, addressing challenges faced by engineers in their data management activities. We want to invite you to play an active role in our efforts to build a German research data infrastructure for the engineering sciences.
There are different ways to participate in NFDI4Ing:
Provide feedback
You can simply write to contact@nfdi4ing.de with your questions, suggestions and ideas. You can also help us by completing the surveys we regularly launch. They are communicated through multiple channels, including our Newsletter (sign up here).
Join our activities
NFDI4Ing regularly hosts community meetings, workshops and other public events. We invite you to join the discussions, and share your challenges, views and insights. You can find a calendar with recent and upcoming events here.
Manage, publish and share your data
We can assist with all processes surrounding the management, publication and sustainable sharing of your research data. We can advise on how to plan out your data management and how to evaluate the FAIRness of your data. For us, this provides insights into common pit-falls and requirements, and may allows us the better address the needs of the engineering community.
Join the consortium
NFDI4Ing is build to be open and adaptable. There are multiple ways to become a participant, most notably our seed fund programme. In general, the first step towards a more formal contribution is to take a look at the project proposal and identify the (task) areas that best align with your interests, goals and expertise. The next step is to contact the respective task area leads. Together, you will discuss how your possible involvement may look like. Eventually, you will draft a formal letter of commitment that will be submitted to the DFG.

As part of the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), the consortium NFDI4Ing aims to develop, disseminate, standardise and provide methods and services to make engineering research data FAIR. A big part of our efforts is to tailor our efforts towards the needs and requirements of the diverse engineering communities. If you have questions, feedback, or need support, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Working meeting of the SIG RDM Training & Education to design the NFDI4Ing learning platform on Friday, 03.05.2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
The NFDI4Ing Community Meeting focused on our archetype ELLEN will take place June 6th, 2024.
On July 25th a NFDI4Ing Community Meeting will focus on the challenges, solutions and services of our archetype FRANK, who mainly works in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and with heterogeneous data sources.
The NFDI4Ing conference 2024 will take place on the 18th & 19th September as a virtual event. The call for proposals is now open!

Working meeting of the SIG RDM Training & Education to design the NFDI4Ing learning platform on Friday, 12.04.2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
The next whole team meeting (Gesamtteammeeting) of NFDI4Ing will take place in Hannover on April 9th/10th, 2024. More information will follow here as soon as it becomes available.
The first NFDI4Ing Community Meeting of 2024 will take place in a virtual format on February 27th. The event is aimed at scientists from all engineering communities who are interested in research software.
The next NFDI4Ing Community Meeting of the materials science and engineering community will take place in a virtual format on Friday, 08 December.
The next meeting of the SIG QA&metrics is on 8 December at 09:00. By the end of the year, the current results of the SIG (DMP, FAIR, Quality dimensions) will be summarised and new topics for the upcoming meetings will
On November 23rd & 24th, the TU Darmstadt hosts the OPEN STRUCTURES conference on data, tools and cultures in research. The conference can be attended free of charge.
The next NFDI4Ing Community Meeting of the heat and process engineering community will take place in a virtual format on Friday, 27 October. The meeting will focus on the data lifecycle and data management plans.

The consortium NFDI4Ing.
Members & Participants
NFDI4Ing represents the engineering community. At its core, the consortium NFDI4Ing consists of eleven member institutions that together applied for the initial funding. Each member introduces its specific expertise and experience to the joint work programme.
Furthermore, the consortium has a great number of participants from all over the German engineering research landscape. All members and participants are part of wider national and international networks such as CRCs and further collaborative research projects, RDM specific networks, and learned societies, many of which initially signed letters of support.
Our open governance model (see structure) allows to leverage these wider networks as needed, e.g. to gain special expertise and pilot users. It also ensures our work programme constantly evolves to adress the needs of the engineering community, as new participants can easily be integrated into the existing governance structure (e.g. through our seed fund programme). The consortium continues to grow and now consists of more than 50 institutions and an even greater number of individual researchers. The Community Clusters.
Gateway to the research engineering communities.
The NFDI4Ing Community Clusters
The task area Community Clusters serves as the gateway to the research engineering communities and their needs. NFDI4Ing coordinates its engagement along the gateways provided by the DFG classification of engineering research areas. The resulting five community clusters
- Mechanical and industrial engineering (CC41)
- Thermal engineering and process engineering (CC42)
- Materials science and engineering (CC43)
- Computer science, systems and electrical engineering (CC44)
- Construction engineering and architecture (CC45)
cover most of the German engineering research landscape and act in close cooperation with the NFDI4Ing archetype task areas and base services on the one hand, and the respective engineering communities on the other hand.
The task area Community Clusters pursues two major objectives and is structured into six subdivions or measures. As mentionend above, it first and foremost serves as gateway to the research engineering communities and their needs. Furthermore, the Community Clusters are themselves adaptable to enable the inclusion of communities that are currently less present in NFDI4Ing, or beyond the scope of the engineering sciences alone. The measure “Initialisation of communication services”, lays the foundation to achieve this objective.
Secondly, the task area Community Clusters works on measures to disseminate the developments and results of the other NFDI4Ing task areas, such as services and best-practices, into the research communities. One central topic in this regard is RDM-related training for engineers, from students and PhD students to research assistants working at higher education or non-university research institutions. The derived tasks are addressed by the measure “Education”. Additionally, this means intensive user and community involvement in the development processes, achieved by means of an agile approach as described below.
The Community Clusters gather cluster-specific information about RDM-related practices and requirements and direct their specific user communities to available solutions within NFDI4Ing. Developed services are tested by the research communities and disseminated via application and training. Emerging new needs trigger the development of solutions in the archetype task areas. The measures “Activation and collaboration” and “Participation” are designed to ensure vast community coverage and intensive engagement. Since RDM will be normative to some extend, NFDI4Ing works on standardisation together with the engineering community in academia and industry, nationally and internationally, within the consortium and across the consortia of the NFDI. This task is addressed in the measure “Standardisation”. As an appropriate academic platform to exchange ideas, the “Journal of Research Data Management in Engineering Science” is currently in development. Responsible for the journal and its operation is the measure “Journal”.

Automated data & knowledge discovery in engineering literature
Measure S-7: Automated data & knowledge discovery
As outlined in the FAIR principles, the aim of research data management is not only to enable humans to find and interpret data, but also to enable automated statistical analysis of data by machines, i.e. data mining and machine learning. In engineering science, the vast majority of available data is hidden in textual publications. For example, in a 2019 survey by the NFDI4Ing consortium, three out of four research groups stated that they do not publish results in data or code repositories (the survey data can be found at https://doi.org/10.25534/tudatalib-104). Additionally, open access publishing is rather uncommon in engineering (FAIR study group TIB). Therefore, generally available engineering research data in the sense of structured representations of information such as tables or datasets is in fact not accessible for state-of-the-art scientific methods. Well-prepared and high quality (meta)data is a prerequisite for algorithmic approaches from fields like high performance data analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and text mining.
Key challenges and objectives
Measure S-7 aims to promote the application of text and data mining methods in the engineering sciences. The use of these technologies will enable engineering scientists to identify patterns in and gain new insights from large quantities of publications that cannot be uncovered by intellectually receiving individual publications.
The basis of every TDM analysis is a text corpus. There are three main challenges in the process of generating a suitable corpus:
1. For TDM analyses, publications should be in a machine readable, structured format. In reality, however, many publications are still provided in PDF format, often with non machine readable diagrams and tables which are not accessible to TDM analyses without pre-processing steps.
2. There is no central source for scientific publications in machine readable, structured formats. Publications are provided by different publishers via different technical systems, e.g. APIs, FTP servers or websites.
3. Since most of the engineering science literature is not published under open access licences, the legal aspects of the text and data mining process itself as well as the publication of its results are often complicated. Nevertheless, these aspects have to be carefully considered in order to avoid copyright infringements.
Measure S-7 will develop services to address these challenges, including the provision of a machine readable corpus of engineering literature and legal guidelines concerning publications with different licence models. In addition, data science approaches will be evaluated to fulfil requirements from several archetypes regarding knowledge discovery.
Tasks
Task S-7-1: Providing a service to enable text and data mining in engineering literature (TUDA)
Based on the communities’ and archetypes’ requirements, the goal is to build a large digital corpus from e. g. articles, proceedings, and other document types relevant for engineering. All documents will be converted to machine readable text, using OCR and layout recognition where needed. Those documents already available in machine-friendly formats will be harmonised in a structured XML-format as far as possible.
Task S-7-2: Providing guidelines for the legal aspects of text and data mining (TIB)
The goal of Task S-7-2 is to provide the legal basis for copyright clearing. Researchers will be able to check if and how particular publications can be made available in digital form for the sake of TDM. In particular, this tool will provide guidelines concerning publications with different licence models, including open access licences and the compliance with copyright regulations.
Task S-7-3: Applying data science methods for knowledge discovery (KIT)
In the field of data science, there is a huge need for accessing as much data as possible from any source to get new insights in the research work. Task S-7-3 evaluates how the information gathered with the help of tasks S-7-1 and S-7-2 can be used to apply data science approaches to fulfil demands from different archetypes regarding knowledge discovery.
Results
In a first step, several engineering working groups at TU Darmstadt were asked about the literature that plays an important role in their research and whose automated analysis could offer them added value. As a result, we received lists of specific literature (e.g. journals and conference proceedings) that are of particular importance for the engineering research at TU Darmstadt. One request that came up several times was the provision of machine-readable figures and tables.
In general, TDM methods are still rarely used in the engineering sciences, with the exception of materials science, where extensive preliminary work exists (see e. g. https://ceder.berkeley.edu/publications/2021_text_mining_review.pdf).

Measure S-6
Community-based training on enabling data-driven science and FAIR data
Measure S-6: Community-based training
Community-based training is key to enable researchers of all engineering disciplines to work successfully in data-driven environments. NFDI4Ing will specifically address the engineering community with trainings tailored towards specific challenges encountered during engineers’ typical research processes, e.g. handling large amounts of data or frequent transitions between empirical and simulation-based research environments. All deliverables will be developed and evaluated in close collaboration with local RDM training and support units at engineering research institutions.
Key challenges and objectives
The concepts and materials for training are needed in all NFDI4Ing task areas. Therefore, the needs of the different research areas within engineering sciences have to be identified, formulated and addressed. The purpose of Measure S-6 is to grant access to basic and specialised RDM-training materials and courses.
Tasks
Task S-6-1: Defining and delivering RDM training contents for engineers
Training contents such as workflow specific RDM guidelines and concepts will originate from the archetypes’ and other task areas’ work and are compiled under the lead of this task. They are structured into (a) topics related to data processes and (b) topics regarding work organisation. NFDI4Ing will deliver the following training contents:
1. Data process related topics
2. Data life cycle: from data management planning to archiving research results
3. Technologies and tools: from data creation to data archiving
4. Handling: from database architectures to models and pre-processing routines
5. Work organisational topics
6.Organisational theory for research teams in engineering and data quality management
7. Best practises and insights for RDM workflows gathered from community participation
In addition to these already identified training contents, an ongoing requirements analysis of the specific needs of the engineering community is crucial. This is especially important considering the importance of training to increase the awareness towards RDM and drive a cultural change. An open and interactive communication platform for feedback and requirements will be established to support the user-oriented development of training materials and courses. New materials will be published under free licences and thus be provided as Open Educational Resources (OER) for reuse and further development by the members of NFDI4Ing and the entire scientific community.
Task S-6-2: Defining RDM training formats for engineers
NFDI4Ing will offer different formats of RDM trainings for different needs, such as: workshops, short seminars, webinars and other eLearning units. A special focus will be set on workshops carried out in cooperation with the Data and Software Carpentries, a worldwide community teaching foundational coding and data science skills to researchers. A combination of online and face-to-face elements, the so-called blended learning approach, is another format that will be considered as it helps face-to-face training to become much more meaningful in practice – using eLearning material for preparation of the trainees who can keep up in their own pace. In addition, the concept of the FAIR Study Group, which has already been established at TIB Hannover, is a favoured alternative to classical workshop formats. Train-the-trainer measures are a further effective possibility for knowledge management and leveraging resources into the community. Such train-the-trainer workshops will be developed and conducted.
Results
The special interest group (SIG) “Basic FDM-Training and further education” has been founded in order to foster the collaboration between NFDI4Ing archetypes and community clusters as well as external initiatives such as the “TU 9 Community for RDM Training Materials for the Engineering Sciences”.
