The FAIR 3D Heritage Conference brought together an international community working on the documentation, publication, preservation and reuse of digital 3D heritage.
An agenda with a focus on data provenance
A recurring theme throughout the conference was the role of sources and evidence. Discussions addressed traceability, reliability, authenticity, credibility, uncertainty and plausibility, raising the broader question of what makes a 3D reconstruction scientifically valuable, especially as AI-supported modelling becomes more common. Further topics included metadata models and schemas for 3D reconstruction, as well as the role of repositories and aggregators within the growing national and European research infrastructure landscape.
NFDI4ING-related work was represented through two contributions. Roger Winkler and Andreas Noback from TU Darmstadt, together with Hana Svatoš-Ražnjević from the University of Stuttgart, contributed work in the context of the Architectural RDM-Pipeline (ARDMP), focusing on FAIR architectural data collections, provenance, and the documentation of sources and modelling decisions. A second contribution by Irena Schmitt, Fabian Rolke and Jyrki Oraskari from RWTH Aachen University addressed lightweight metadata for 3D representations of cultural heritage, with a particular focus on traceability, data quality and scalable documentation workflows.
Networking opportunities for future collaborations
The conference also provided valuable opportunities to connect with researchers and infrastructure initiatives from NFDI4Objects, the DFG 3D Viewer, MorphoSource, the IIIF community and the IDOVIR project. These exchanges were particularly useful for discussing current approaches to 3D publication, aggregation, interoperability and long-term access.
For NFDI4ING, the conference provided useful perspectives on how source documentation, provenance, uncertainty and metadata can strengthen the transparency and reuse of research data beyond the cultural heritage domain.
