The edited volume The Power of Sources in Architecture Research and Practice has recently been published as part of the Forum Architekturwissenschaft series. The book explores the diverse roles of sources in architectural research, ranging from archives and material collections to digital infrastructures and data. The volume was edited by Eva Maria Froschauer, Frederike Lausch, Sandra Meireis, and Klaus Platzgummer.
Roger Winkler, Chris Dähne, and Andreas Noback contribute the chapter „Data Not Publicly Available – Barriers and Opportunities to Data-driven Research in the Fields of Construction and Urbanism“, which reflects on the current state of data availability in architectural research. Using case studies from urban and constuction research, the chapter discusses challenges related to fragmented data sources, heterogeneous formats, limited interoperability, and the accessibility of data. The publication outlines perspectives for more open, interoperable, and FAIR research data practices. These considerations provide important conceptual background for the ongoing development of the Architectural RDM-Pipeline, a joint project by the Institute for Computational Design and Construction at the University of Stuttgart and the University and State Library at TU Darmstadt in the context of NFDI4ING. The project aims to develop a pipeline that supports researchers in documenting, connecting, exploring, and publishing architectural research data through practical, FAIR-oriented workflows.
